As Christmas approaches, UK residents are being urged to see whether they qualify for additional payments this winter. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is set to distribute extra financial support that could amount to over £485.
These extra payments are provided on top of your regular benefits—but you must satisfy specific eligibility criteria to receive them.
The DWP oversees several schemes including Cold Weather Payments, the Warm Home Discount, the Winter Fuel Allowance, and a Christmas Bonus.
Here’s a breakdown of each payment, who it’s for, and what amounts to expect:
If you’re eligible, you’ll get a one-off £150 discount on your electricity bill—applied directly by your energy provider (not as a cash payout). For winter 2025–2026, the scheme will operate across England, Wales, and Scotland.
The discount will typically be applied between November 2025 and 31 March 2026.
Most households that qualify will have this applied automatically.
This benefit is available for winter 2025–2026.
- If someone in your household is between State Pension age and 79, they may receive £200.
- If they are 80 or older, they may receive £300.
These rules apply in England and Wales.
To be eligible, individuals must have been born on or before 21 September 1959. You should receive a formal letter in October or November about your entitlement.
Note: If your income exceeds £35,000, HMRC may reclaim part or all of the payment through the tax system.
If you’re receiving certain DWP benefits during the qualifying week in December 2025, you’ll automatically get a tax-free £10 Christmas Bonus—it will land in your account during the first week of December, labeled “DWP XB” on your bank statement.

This bonus has remained unchanged at £10 since its introduction in 1972. Many campaigners have called for its value to be increased to better reflect today’s costs.
If you believe you qualify but haven’t received it by 1 January 2026, contact your local Jobcentre Plus or the Pension Service.
These payments apply between 1 November 2025 and 31 March 2026. If you are on qualifying benefits such as Universal Credit or Pension Credit, you may automatically receive £25 when your area meets the cold weather conditions.
To check whether your area is eligible (or if you should have already received a payment), go to GOV.UK and enter your postcode. For Universal Credit claimants, you can also check your online journal.
If you think you were due a payment but haven’t received it, reach out to the department managing your benefit.
As winter and the Christmas season approach, multiple additional support payments may be available to eligible UK residents—potentially totaling more than £485 on top of regular benefits. The DWP administers these via the Warm Home Discount, Winter Fuel Payment, Christmas Bonus, and Cold Weather Payments.
Eligibility hinges on age, benefit status, income, and regional conditions, so it’s crucial to check whether you meet the criteria—and to contact the relevant department if you believe you were entitled but did not receive a payment.
You generally must be receiving certain DWP benefits—such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or other support-related payments—during the qualifying week or season. Detailed eligibility depends on the specific scheme, so it’s best to check GOV.UK or your benefit documentation.
If you think you should have received a payment and didn’t, contact the relevant department: for most benefits, this means your local Jobcentre Plus or Pension Service. Have your benefit details and dates ready to support your claim.
